Wordsworth's lakes and fells, from Grasmere to Ullswater
Jump to:
Few landscapes in England have captured the imagination more than those of the Lake District. Tucked into the northwest corner of Cumbria, this swathe of high fells, mountain tarns, and ribbon lakes is Britain’s largest national park, now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for a farming culture that protected and preserved its open spaces and wild natural beauty. During this 9-day hotel-based trip, we experience some of the most beautiful and interesting walks in the Lake District while maintaining an easy/moderate grade.
Grasmere, in the heart of the Lake District, is our first base. From this village of grey-stone houses and narrow streets, once the home of the poet William Wordsworth, we walk the valleys, fells and lakes that were his inspiration. As well as visiting Wordsworth’s former homes at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, our walks take us through classic Wordsworth territory: along the Coffin Route between Grasmere and Rydal, and up past the falling water of Sour Milk Gyll to the mountain lake of Easedale Tarn.
Next, we head north to Derwentwater, a lake ringed by high fells. From here we visit the stone circle of Castlerigg, trace the shore of the lake below Catbells, explore the market town of Keswick and hike through the Borrowdale valley.
Our final base is Ullswater. We follow the waterfalls of Aira Force up to the summit of Gowbarrow Fell, with views down the length of the lake, and hike the eastern section of the Ullswater Way, whose symbol is the daffodil Wordsworth first noticed on these shores.
From lakeshore paths to views of the craggy fells, this trip has all the essential elements of a classic English walking holiday. We hope you’ll join us.
This trip suits hikers who want to immerse themselves in the Lake District without long or strenuous days. Hikes range from 4.5 to 7.5 miles with modest climbs. Our guides adapt each day to the group, balancing hiking with time to rest at the hotel or browse the shops and galleries in town. Along the way, we visit the valleys, fells and lakes that inspired Wordsworth.
With multiple nights at each of our three hotels, you unpack only twice and spend more time walking than packing.
If you wish to have your own room, there is a single room supplement fee of $950. Please let us know at the time of registration if you would like a single room. Single rooms are limited.
If you are traveling alone and would like to share a room, we will match you with a roommate. If there is no one with whom you can share, a “forced” single fee of $600 will apply.
Airfare, train from Penrith to Manchester on Day 9, lunches, beverages, travel insurance, tips to guides, items of a personal nature.
During this trip, we will be based in three different locations. As our luggage will be transferred from location to location along with the group, you will only need to carry a day pack during our walks. We still encourage our trip members to bring one medium-sized bag they can manage easily by themselves, keeping in mind that our hotels may have narrow hallways and no elevators. See our sample packing list.
We stay in three traditional English hotels: in Grasmere, on the shore at the south end of Derwentwater, and in Glenridding on Ullswater. Every room has a private bathroom. Please plan on no elevators. Breakfasts and dinners are served at the hotels, and lunches are on your own, packed for the trail or at local cafes and pubs.
Fly into Manchester Airport, arriving in time for the 11:00 am rendezvous on Day 1. We recommend arriving a day early to allow for adjusting to the time difference and to accommodate any travel or luggage delays. On departure day, the 10:00 am train from Penrith arrives in Manchester by 12:15 pm, so book return flights after 3:00 pm, or plan to spend the night in Manchester and fly out the next day. Please contact us for help with trains and travel.
We meet at Manchester Airport, Terminal 2, at 11:00 am on the first day of the trip. Terminal 2 offers a comfortable waiting area as well as amenities. We will gather at the small waiting/sitting area to the right of the Pret A Manger café. The exact meeting details will be noted in our final Rendezvous Information.
The walking tour ends at Penrith train station on Day 9, after a morning transfer of about 40 minutes from Glenridding. From Penrith, trains run to Manchester and other points in England and Scotland. Please allow for travel time when making air reservations.
