Cross-country skiing and winter walking

Nestled just northwest of Innsbruck, near the German-Bavarian border, the picturesque hamlet of Obern in the Leutasch Valley will be our base for this unforgettable 8-day winter adventure. Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Wetterstein, Karwendel, and Mieminger mountain ranges—including the iconic Hohe Munde—this region is one of Europe’s premier destinations for cross-country skiing and winter sports.
The Leutasch Valley is a true winter paradise, offering 160 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails for both classic and skate skiing, 85 miles of maintained winter walking trails, perfect for non-skiers and nature lovers, sledding (rodeling) runs, scenic snow-covered landscapes, and even curling.
A host site for the 1956 and 1976 Winter Olympic Games, the valley offers terrain for every level—from flat, beginner-friendly tracks to the challenging 25-kilometer Olympic Loop. Glide through the storybook meadows of the Gaistal Valley, ski along the gentle Leutascher Ache river, or explore the forested Hochmoos hills toward the famed resort town of Seefeld.
Along the trail, we’ll discover cozy trailside cafés serving warm strudel, rich coffee, and steaming mugs of Glühwein—Austria’s beloved spiced wine. The valley’s peaceful charm is preserved by its focus on cross-country skiing, with just one lift for downhill skiing. This ensures a serene, uncrowded experience amid classic Tyrolean farmhouses and snow-blanketed forests.
After a full day outdoors, unwind at our welcoming, family-run 3-star hotel, located right next to the ski trails. Enjoy a relaxing sauna and solarium, as well as traditional meals and warm, personalized service.
Whether you’re a seasoned skier or trying cross-country for the first time, the Leutasch Valley offers the perfect mix of activity, relaxation, and breathtaking alpine beauty. Come experience the quiet magic of winter in Austria.

For this trip, we will be staying at a comfortable, traditional 3-star hotel located at the upper end of Leutasch Valley in the hamlet of Obern. The hotel is well located near entry points to several ski trails. Rooms are double occupancy with private baths. There is a small lounge area, a bar, and a pleasant dining room. There is also a sauna and solarium as well. Breakfast buffet, afternoon snack, and dinners are served at the hotel.
Innsbruck is the closest airport to Leutasch, only 30 minutes by train or taxi. This is a small airport and flights can be limited. Munich is another good option as an arrival and departure city. This airport is about 4 1/2 hours away by train, 2 hours by shared shuttle.
This is one of our favorite trips. It’s a great trip for those looking for an active but relaxing European winter vacation. The Leutasch valley is an almost fairy-tale-like setting with broad, open, snow-covered fields dotted with small hamlets and old-world chalets. The area offers a variety of activities that appeal to a wide range of ages and abilities, including cross country skiing, winter walking, sledding, and downhill skiing.
The mountain resort areas of Seefeld and Leutasch offer an amazingly extensive network of cross-country ski, winter walker and rodel (sled) trails. The Alps take on a whole different feel in the winter, when the mountains and villages are blanketed in snow. Taking part in an active European-style winter vacation is a wonderfully exhilarating yet peaceful and restorative experience.
Independent travel to our hotel in Leutasch.
The trip will end with breakfast at the hotel on the last day.
